The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) was established in 1983 as a means to provide low-cost, high quality legal defense to home educators. HSLDA takes its commitment to home educators seriously. Although HSLDA is very much a Christian organization, they defend anyone’s right to home-school their children on the principle that parents have the fundamental right to direct the upbringing of their children. Their attorneys are all parents who have, are, or will home educate their own children.

For $115 per year ($95 for Connecticut TEACH members), HSLDA will represent you with legal counsel for any problems you encounter regarding your right to home educate your children. Also provided is a bi-monthly newsletter with information on the current legal issues in each state. Request an application from: HSLDA, Paeonian Springs, VA 22129.

In addition to this legal defense service, HSLDA has closely tracked and influenced federal legal developments of concern to home educators, and has worked with state home education organizations to draft legislation and regulations favorable to home education.
