Christian Homeschooling 101

So, you’ve decided to homeschool?

Or, perhaps you are just exploring the possibility. Here are some useful tips to help you get started.

#1 - Pray and trust God for the confidence, direction, and guidance you need.
It is natural to feel somewhat uncertain when considering homeschooling. In James 1:5, God promises, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all liberally…and it shall be given him.” Ask God for help and guidance as you make your decision to homeschool.

#2 - Increase your understanding of homeschooling by reading, talking to homeschooling parents, and attending informational events for new homeschoolers.

“Veteran” homeschooling parents are usually eager to share their homeschooling experience with you, if you ask. There are also many informative books you may read regarding all facets of homeschooling (some of which are listed on our resources page). In addition, TEACH and area support groups periodically sponsor events, such as conferences, workshops and homeschool information nights, for those interested in learning more about homeschooling in Connecticut.

#3 - Become familiar with Connecticut’s Laws pertaining to homeschooling.

Although Connecticut is a very homeschool-friendly state, there are guidelines with which you should become familiar. These are explained in greater detail on our CT Law page.

#4 - Develop a Mission Statement and set goals for the school year.

Once you and your spouse have determined that home education is what you both want for your family, it is strongly recommended that you develop a mission statement and establish goals for the school year. This will keep you aware of your purpose for home educating should the road become difficult or should you become overwhelmed by the many opportunities afforded homeschool families.

#5 - Choose and purchase curricula.

One of the benefits of homeschooling is that it enables you to tailor your child’s education to their unique style of learning. In addition to an abundance of curriculum choices, there are many homeschool suppliers from which to choose. #6 - Get Organized.

There is a certain measure of structure and organization that is necessary to successfully homeschool. Not only will it enable you to be a good steward of your time and resources, it will also provide an environment in which your child will flourish and feel secure.

#7 - Get Connected.

Getting connected to the homeschool community will provide you encouragement and fellowship throughout your homeschool journey. There are many homeschool organizations and support groups throughout the State of Connecticut. Click here to find one near you.
