FALL FAMILY DAY Scarecrow Contest

The day wouldn’t be complete without a Scarecrow Contest!

Have you ever thought about creating your very own Scarecrow!  Here’s a chance to let your imagination run wild and compete for a prize in the process.

Gather up your supplies and enter our Fall Family Day Scarecrow Contest!  There is no entry fee, and you can use supplies scavenged from the barn or storage shed. Borrow Grandpa’s old straw hat, maybe Grandma’s old apron… even Fido’s bandana… just be sure to ask first! This is a fun activity in which the whole family can participate together.  Deadline to enter is Sunday, October 4th.  See details below!

Scarecrow Contest Details & Instructions

ELIGIBILITY:  Our Scarecrow Contest is open to all families attending TEACH’s Fall Family Day event. Each family may enter one (1) scarecrow. There is NO cost to enter the contest.

ENTRY & DEADLINE:  To enter, e-mail with your name, address, and telephone number.  The words “Scarecrow Contest” should appear in the Subject line. All e-mails must be received by midnight on Sunday, October 3, 2015.

SCARECROW THEME:  Scarecrow displays may reflect a special theme and/or promote some aspect of homeschooling. Whether traditional or whimsical, Scarecrows should NOT be frightening. The scarecrow exhibit area is family friendly. Therefore, monsters, gruesome or especially scary Entries will be disqualified.

~ TEACH reserves the right to disqualify Entries we feel to be distasteful or not family friendly. ~

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS:  Scarecrows must be durable and able to stand up to sun, wind and possibly rain showers. All Entries must be hand-made—made from cast-off clothing, burlap, gunny sacks, jeans, overalls, straw hats, aprons, bonnets, corn shocks, raffia, straw, etc. No commercial costumes, rubber masks, plastic masks etc. will be allowed.

Structure:  Use care in choosing your materials due to a variety of possible weather conditions. All decorations must be firmly attached to your scarecrow. We recommend a 2 x 4 piece of lumber for the central body. A broomstick or 2 x 4 is recommended for the arms. We will supply a 4- to 5-foot-tall steel T-post already placed into the ground. You will need to bring rope or wire to attach your scarecrow to the post.

Space:  All Entries may include props and decor to reflect the theme of your display. However, Scarecrows and props must fit into a 6 x 6 foot area. If you choose to bring fresh vegetables or fruits (like pumpkins), they must be whole and not punctured or carved to ensure they last through the duration of the contest. You are welcome to visit your Scarecrow throughout the day and keep it in good presentable condition. TEACH reserves the right to remove any Entries that do not maintain their ability to be displayed.

SET UP:  All Entries will be assigned a location for set up upon check-in. You may check-in and set up your scarecrow entry any time between 8:00 and 8:30 am on Saturday, October 10th.  A check-in location will be communicated by e-mail to participants a week before Fall Family Day.

DURATION:  All Scarecrows are to be on display throughout the Fall Family Day event and may be removed between 5:00 and 6:00 pm Saturday evening. We ask that you please not remove your entry before 5:00 pm.

JUDGING:  All Scarecrows will be judged and voted on by our Fall Family Day attendees. Each attendee with a paid registration will be given one ballot at check-in with which to vote.

AWARDS PRESENTATION:  Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at approximately 3 pm on Saturday, October 10th, just before the last session. If you are not present and win an award, it will be mailed via First Class Postal mail to the name and address provided in your contest entry e-mail. Scarecrows will remain on display for the duration of the event.

CASH PRIZES:  Cash prizes will be awarded to the First, Second, and Third place winners along with a MI Gift Certificate.

► First Place: $25 plus a MI gift certificate*
► Second Place: $20 plus a MI gift certificate*
► Third Place: $15 plus a MI gift certificate*

REMOVAL OF DISPLAYS:  Any Scarecrows not removed by 6:00 pm may be discarded by TEACH during cleanup of the facility. If for some reason you are unable to stay to the end of the Fall Family Day event, please make arrangements for someone else to remove your entry for you. Please let TEACH know who you have designated for this task.
